Shanghai Diamond Exchange hosts road show to promote Chinese company participation at India International Gems and Jewellery Show

    In partnership with the Shanghai Diamond Exchange (SDE), CGI Shanghai along with The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) organized a Road Show today to promote the upcoming India International Gem and Jewellery Show (IIJS), which will be held in Mumbai from 27-31 July, 2017.

2. The Road Show held today was hosted at SDE premises and presided over by Mr. Lin Qiang, President of Shanghai Diamond Exchange along with Consul General of India. Mr. Sanjay Singh, Director GJEPC made a detailed presentation outlining the various facilities being extended to Chinese participants at the upcoming IIJS Show in Mumbai. It may be noted that the IIJS 2017 event will showcase two separate events, one focusing on the gems and jewelry sector, while the other event will showcase machinery and equipments related to the diamonds and jewelry industry.

3. In his remarks, Mr. Lin Qiang, President of Shanghai Diamond Exchange welcomed the initiative of GJEPC to organize the Road show in Shanghai and stated that SDE would actively consider participating at the IIJS 2017 with a large delegation from eastern China region. Consul General Prakash Gupta emphasized that gems and jewelry was an important component of the trade basket with China and that the Consulate would take all necessary steps to facilitate Chinese industry participation at the upcoming IIJS 2017.

4. It may be noted that in 2016, India’s exports to China grew by 28.48% to reach USD 2.48 billion. In 2016, India was the second largest exporter of gems, stones and diamonds to China with a total market share of 31.8 %.  In the first quarter of 2017, Indian exports of diamonds and gems and stones amounted to USD 558 million capitalizing a total market share of 33.8%.

5. It may also be noted that the Indian diamond trading community, which is presently operating out of the premises of Shanghai Diamond Exchange, is the largest foreign community to be hosted at SDE. There are more than fifty plus Indian diamond traders registered at SDE, who have been conducting diamond trade into mainland China since early 2009. As a follow up to today’s event, it is expected that President Lin Qiang of Shanghai Diamond Exchange will lead a delegation of Chinese diamond entrepreneurs to attend the upcoming IIJS in Mumbai in July 2017.
