PIO conversion to OCI

The PIO Card scheme has been withdrawn with effect from 09.01.2015. Henceforth, applicants may apply only for OCI card.

The last date for submission of online applications for registration as OCI cardholder in lieu of PIO card by the existing PIO cardholders (holding valid PIO cards as on 09 January 2015) is 31st December 2017

PIO cardholders are advised to apply for OCI Card before 31st December 2017 at http://passport.gov.in/oci/ Please note that applicants residing in Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu may submit the applications at the Consulate General of India, Shanghai.

Documents required:

  1. Online application with two 2x2(50x50mm) size photographs
  2. Current passport and a copy of passport
  3. PIO Card and copy of PIO Card
  4. Address proof  

Issue of OCI card in lieu of PIO Card will be on gratis basis only till December 31, 2017 after which a fee of RMB 2293 would be charged.  

Applicants may now also submit their applications for OCI card in lieu of PIO card to the Embassy/Consulate/FFRO concerned within the Consular jurisdiction of their place of residence. This is in modification of the earlier instruction that they should apply only at the location where the PIO card was issued.

Following benefits will be allowed to an OCI card holder:

  • OCI card is a smart card which will facilitate quicker immigration clearance at the immigration counters in India.
  • Multi-purpose, multiple entries, lifelong visa for visiting India
  • Exemption from registration with local police authorities for any length of stay in India
  • Parity with NRI in respect of economic, financial and educational fields except in matters relating to the acquisition of agricultural /plantation properties.
