Consulate General of India along with Shanghai University jointly organized a commemorative event to honour the 141st birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at Shanghai University. It may be noted that 31st October (birthday of Sardar Patel) is commemorated as the National Unity Day in India and the event at Shanghai University was organized to celebrate the same.
Nearly 150 students from Shanghai University participated at the commemorative event along with Dean and Director of International Affairs Department of Shanghai University. Floral tributes were paid to portrait of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Consul General delivered a Key Note address highlighting the pivotal role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the independence movement, of India as well as in ensuring the unification of the 565 Princes States immediately after independence. Bio-profile of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (translated in Chinese) was distributed amongst all the Chinese students who attended the event.
Additionally a cultural dance performance titled “Rhythm of Rajasthan” was also organized at the Shanghai University. It featured a troupe of Rajasthani Kalbelia dancers, who had been sponsored by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), which was very warmly received by audience.
Students of Shanghai University have been requested to contribute their views on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel using social media platform(s) and in the form of essays which would be subsequently posted on the Consulate General of India Shanghai’s website.
